Spring in Ohio

Though the weather has been quite pleasant in Northeast Ohio, the normal temps have returned and there is a dusting of snow on the grass. Outside the window a downy woodpecker searches for food. He remains in a small, open area, pecking the ground. What do they eat? What sort of insect life could there be with current temperatures?

Edward O. Wilson

Edward O. Wilson, a two time Pulitzer Prize winner, spoke at the Cleveland Public Library today. He is the Pellegrino University Research Professor, Emeritus, at Harvard University. A fascinating lecture on biodiversity helped explain the current equilibrium and future for the earth and humanity.

The lesson? Our generation will see the state of the environment get much worse. We will not live to see the population peak. About 20% of the earth's population lives in abject poverty without clean water or planning on a next meal. In this dire condition, the poorest humans reproduce en masse. They have no foreseeable future and so create as many offspring as possible. Not surprisingly, this position is supported by many religions as they seek to increase their membership and to replace the dying. After all, isn't the measure of a man the number of hungry mouths he can sire? Isn't the value of a woman the number of times she is giving birth? The hope? Education of women and economic improvement.

Backpacking Seminar over

The intro backpacking seminar is finished for this year! It went smoothly with thoughtful questions from the audience. An intro level backpacking trip will be held in June. We will go to Missionary Creek, in Pennsylvania. It is reputed to be a scenic area and suited to weekend trips.

Backpacking Seminar

There will be an Introduction to Backpacking Seminar next Saturday. As club VP, I must organize and help by teaching a section titled Wilderness Ethics. Other topics will include Clothing, Gear, Food, Hazards, and Lightweight Packing.
Hope all is going well for Tulip. This will be a big move. She deserves an understanding shoulder and someone who is skilled in home repair & maintenance. Sadly, OwenThePeaceCorpsVolunteerCat will be unavailable to assist!
